Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Former Upper Michigan Congressman Bart Stupak has endorsed one of the candidates running for the 1st Congressional District seat currently held by Republican Dan Benishek.

Democrat Lon Johnson’s campaign announced today that Stupak is endorsing his run.

Stupak says he is supporting Johnson because he will work to create a U.P. and Northern Michigan families can stay and succeed.

Johnson said he is honored to have the endorsement of the former Congressman.

Stupak, a Democrat, represented the district for 18 years, retiring in 2010.

Benishek won the seat after Stupak retired and now, Benishek is retiring at the end of his current term.

So far, Johnson is being challenged on the Democratic side by Jerry Cannon and by current State Senator Tom Casperson on the Republican ticket.
