Lansing, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – An Upper Michigan lawmaker is disagreeing with a former Michigan governor about the safety of a pipeline that runs underneath the Straits of Mackinac.

Former Governor William Milliken, in a recent published opinion column, said the pipeline is aging and poses an environmental threat and should no longer be used to transport oil.

He also says the state must not risk the Great Lakes for the benefit of a private interest.

But State Senator Tom Casperson says that is not accurate and that the pipeline is safe.

The Escanaba Republican says there have been constant tests on the pipeline and the results show the line is safe for continued operation.
