Great Lakes Radio NewsMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)The Marquette City Commission has adopted a resolution supporting a Department of Natural Resources offer of emergency funding for harbor dredging.

The Commission passed the resolution last night after State Senator Tom Casperson and 109th District State Representative John Kivela secured funding to dredge the Marquette Harbor.

Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation last week to spend $21 million on emergency dredging of 58 harbors in the state. Marquette was overlooked in the original draft of the plan despite its critical need for dredging.

In response, Casperson and Kivela launched a bipartisan effort to lobby the state to rectify the situation, which resulted in the DNR adding Marquette to the plan, based upon the estimate of the dredging needs of the city.
