Gilbert Elementary in Gwinn to Close
MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Gwinn Schools Board of Education has voted to close a school building in an effort to address a $1.2 million budget deficit facing the district next year.
The board voted 5 to 1 last night to close the Gilbert Elementary school and transfer the students to Sawyer Elementary starting this fall. Board member Bill Nordeen cast the lone “no” vote. Board V.P. Ruth Spade was not in attendance at the meeting.
Board members say the amount of classrooms in the buildings was a factor in the decision. Sawyer Elementary has 10 more full-size classrooms than Gilbert Elementary.
The plan will affect 575 students in the district.
