Just after 10 o’clock, a backpack was found wedged between the front wall of their offices and a newspaper vending machine. Due to recent controversy between pro-mining advocates and environmental groups, and a Congressional Town Hall meeting scheduled nearby, the backpack was deemed as suspicious.

The backpack was x-rayed and searched and no explosives were found. The backpack and contents were turned over to Hurley Police. The name of an Ironwood, MI, man was found inside the backpack and was questioned by police.  He admitted to owning the backpack and leaving it in Hurley the night before but he said he was very intoxicated and could not remember where he left it.

He also said he did not notify the police because the backpack contained a small quantity of illegal drugs. The man’s name is being withheld pending further investigation.
