Legislation Still Working Towards Lowering BAC for Boats, ORV’s, Snowmobiles
MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Legislation to bring the legal blood alcohol content for boating, snowmobiling and ORV riding in line with driving has been in the works for 10 years, but the lead sponsor of the package said he hopes this is the year it will finally become law.
Representative Matt Lori told the House Criminal Justice Committee this week that similar legislation, reducing the legal blood alcohol content to 0.08 percent from the current 0.10 percent, has been introduced since the 2003-04 session, getting as far as passing the House.
The St. Joseph County Republican says the legislation is an effort to simplify law enforcement by making the line for legal drunkenness the same for all vehicles, as well as to discourage drinking and operating motorized vehicles.
Unlike the change in the vehicle code, Lori said there is no financial penalty to the state for not reducing the legal limit for off-road vehicles.
