The “Lake Char” ports in Marquette and is the DNR’s newest vessel, launched in 2007. The vessel is used primarily to assess Lake Trout populations and generate annual lake trout harvest quotas, as well as to provide information on sea lampreys.

The “Lake Char” and the other research vessels work throughout the lakes on a variety of projects from the time ice has cleared well into November.

The DNR has operated research vessels on the Great Lakes since the 1960s.
