DNR Research Vessel in Water for Season
MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) –The Department of Natural Resources says its Lake Superior research vessel is back on the water for the season.
The vessel “Lake Char” is one of four DNR vessels conducting annual surveys of Great Lakes fish populations. The DNR says the vessels are critical in their effort to conserve, protect and manage the Great Lakes.
The “Lake Char” ports in Marquette and is the DNR’s newest vessel, launched in 2007. The vessel is used primarily to assess Lake Trout populations and generate annual lake trout harvest quotas, as well as to provide information on sea lampreys.
The “Lake Char” and the other research vessels work throughout the lakes on a variety of projects from the time ice has cleared well into November.
The DNR has operated research vessels on the Great Lakes since the 1960s.
