Legislation to Maintain Great Lakes Harbors
Rep. Benishek (R-Mich)
MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – U.S. Representative Dan Benishek has joined two Congressional colleagues from Michigan introducing legislation aiding the dredging of Great Lakes commercial harbors.
Benishek and Representatives Bill Huizenga and Candice Miller have introduced the Great Lakes Navigation System Sustainability Act of 2013. It uses funds from the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund to dredge commercial harbors on the Great Lakes and establishes a cost sharing program to make funds available to recreational harbors that provide 50% of the cost to a Great Lakes Navigation System project.
Benishek says harbors and ports are a critical part of the Northern Michigan economy and this legislation maintaining the harbors is more important than ever because the region is facing historically low Great Lakes water levels.
Joining as original cosponsors of the bill are Representatives Louise Slaughter and Brian Higgins of New York.
