Severe Weather Ravages Parts of Lower Michigan

Filed under: U.P. News Updates |

National_Weather_Service MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The National Weather Service says a wave of severe thunderstorms hit parts of lower Michigan, generating winds gusting to 70 mph, golf-ball size hail and a funnel cloud.

Storm damage and power outages were reported in Midland, Saginaw County’s Thomas Township, parts of southern Saginaw County and northern Genesee County.

The weather service says a trained spotter reported a funnel cloud about 3:00 p.m. Monday at a spot 4 miles west-southwest of Saginaw. There were no immediate reports of a tornado touchdown.

Saginaw County Central Dispatch Director Tom McIntyre said initial reports of storm damage included some trees and wires down, but there was no specific information immediately available on property damage or injuries.

Hail as large as 1.75 inches was reported 5 miles north-northwest of Montrose in the Flint area. The weather service also reported trees and wires down in Midland County.

Consumers Energy says about 27,600 customers remained without power this morning — primarily in the Flint, Saginaw and Midland areas. About 45,000 customers lost power statewide as a result of Monday’s storms.  DTE Energy says about 17,000 customers are without power, down from about 24,000.

The utility’s hardest hit area was Macomb County.  Heavy rain, high winds and hail brought down trees and power lines. Utility crews have been working since last night to get the power restored.
