Gwinn Man to Stand Trial for Fatal Accident

U.P._News_UpdateMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)A 24-year old truck driver will stand trial on multiple charges for drugged and reckless driving in a three-vehicle accident that claimed the lives of an elderly Upper Peninsula couple in March.

Harley Durocher of Gwinn was taken to Delta County Circuit Court on two counts each of operating a motor vehicle with the presence of a controlled substance causing death, reckless driving causing death and operating with a suspended license causing death.

Police say Durocher was driving a logging truck on the night of March 20th when he ran a red light at an intersection in Gladstone and his semi slammed into two vehicles.

One of the drivers, Thomas Swift, 73, of Escanaba, died at the scene. His wife Barbara, 73, a passenger in the vehicle, died of her injuries several days later at Marquette General Hospital.

Durocher remains lodged in the Delta County jail on a $100,000 bond. He faces up to 15 years in prison on each count, if convicted.  No court date has been scheduled.
