U.P._News_UpdateMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)Today is the official opening day of FinnFest USA 2013 in the Houghton Hancock area.

It’s been 23 years since Michigan’s Copper Country last hosted the international Finnish-American festival.  2013 is the 100th anniversary of the famous 1913 Copper Strike and the Keweenaw Peninsula is still home to one of the largest populations of Finnish descent.

The grand tori, or market, opened this afternoon at Michigan Tech’s Student Development Center. Opening ceremonies take place this evening at the Rozsa Center.  The Business and Education Forums are being held connecting  entrepreneurs and educators from both sides of the Atlantic.  Also, a monument to Big Louie Moilanen has been dedicated outside the Finnish-American Heritage Center.

A complete schedule can be viewed at www.finnfestusa2013.org.
