U.P. Soldier Remains Identified Over 40 Years Later

U.P._News_UpdateMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)Nearly 43 years after a northern Michigan soldier was thought to have died in the Vietnam War, his remains have been identified.

Army specialist John Burgess, 21, of Kingsley was killed on June 30, 1970 when his helicopter was shot down near the Cambodian/South Vietnam border.

Three others on board also died.  Their remains were found shortly after the crash, but no remains could be attributed to Burgess until now.

Investigators recently identified him through forensic and circumstantial evidence.

The Department of Defense says Burgess will be buried with full military honors on July 2 at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.
