Lansing, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Legislation by an Upper Michigan lawmaker would make flying a drone near the Mackinac Bridge illegal.

The bill would prohibit a person from flying a drone within 1,000 feet of the Mackinac Bridge, unless the drone is being used for an engineering inspection or for security or marketing purposes.

A violation would be a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.

State Senator Tom Casperson of Escanaba is the bill sponsor.

He says drones flying above the bridge or hovering over traffic, raises some safety concerns for those on the bridge.

The legislation is in a Senate committee.
