Lansing, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – 109th District State Representative John Kivela testified in Lansing today on a measure he has introduced to curb Chronic Wasting Disease in the U.P. deer herd.

The Marquette Democrat testified on the measure in front of the the House Natural Resources Committee.

Kivela’s bill would to increase the penalties for illegally bringing a deer carcass into Michigan from another state known to have deer with CWD to a fine of between $500 to $2,000, and/or a sentence of up to 90 days in jail.

Kivela said the increased penalties are needed as the disease was recently found in a Wisconsin deer about 25 miles from the Western U.P. border.

So far, all cases of the disease in the state have been found downstate around the state Capitol region.
