MQT City Commission to Vote on MGH Tax Dispute
MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Marquette City Commission is voting tonight on the hiring of extra legal counsel to respond to a tax valuation challenge by Marquette General Hospital.
The agenda item comes after officials with MGH requested a state tax tribunal hearing disputing the tax valuation placed on the hospital’s property as determined during the sale process of the facility to Duke-LifePoint.
City officials arrived at the tax value through due diligence exercised while the proposed purchase of MGH was under review by MI Attorney General Bill Schuette’s office and they are standing by the figure.
The city spent $75,000 over the six-month pre-sale process in conjunction with the Attorney General’s office determining the number and now may have to spend an additional $100,000 to defend it in the dispute.
Tonight’s City Commission meeting gets under way at 7:00 o’clock at Commission Chambers at City Hall in Marquette.
