Cliffs To Switch Energy Providers
MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Cliffs Natural Resources has announced a plan to switch energy providers for their Marquette County mining operations from WE Energies and their Marquette-based Presque Isle Power Plant to Chicago-based Integrys, Inc.
Reports say the plan was communicated to WE Energies late last month by Cliffs and the mining company says service switch is being made due to financial reasons. The shifting of electrical service providers by Cliffs is believed to be connected to the planned reduction of operations at the Empire Mine in the near future.
WE Energies officials say the impact of this plan on the future of the Presque Isle Power Plant is not fully known at this time. The new plan calls for power for the mines to be purchased by Cliffs from Integrys while We Energies will continue supplying customer service and distribution functions for the mines.
