MDOT, MTU Working to Better Railways

Great Lakes Radio News UpdateMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)The Michigan Department of Transportation is collaborating with the Rail Transportation Program at Michigan Tech and the Tioga Group, Inc. in two separate studies that investigate the potential toward better use of rural rail lines in Northern Michigan.

Essential to this process is an understanding of the current shipping patterns and modal selections in the region. Data on commodities that are, or could be, shipped by rail is currently limited, as well as information on the perceived challenges by shippers and rail service providers.
