U.P. Man Arrested After Failing to Appear for Court Dates
MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – An Upper Peninsula man who failed to appear for recent court dates in Cheboygan and Chippewa counties has been arrested in Wisconsin.
52-year old Scotlund Stivers is being held in the Marinette County jail fighting extradition back to Michigan.
Stivers was charged with endangering Cheboygan County courtroom personnel when he allegedly attempted to ingest sodium cyanide in an effort to take his own life in March 2012 after being sentenced to jail. In Chippewa County, poison and 25 firearms were found by police during the search of his house in Soo Township.
Stivers’ troubles began three years ago when he abandoned three boats in Lake Huron’s Duncan Bay that leaked oil, one of them is still sunk in 18 feet of water. He plead guilty to violating Department of Environmental Quality laws and was ordered to serve 30 days in jail and pay substantial fines and costs.
