U.S. Representative Dan Benishek.

Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The race appears to be heating up for the 2014 campaign in Michigan’s 1st Congressional District where two-term Republican Representative Dan Benishek of Crystal Falls is likely to run for another term.

Recent reports say his Democratic opponent will be 65-year old Jerry Cannon, a former Kalkaska County Sheriff. Cannon is also a retired Army National Guard Major General who has been recruited to run by Democratic State Chairman Lon Johnson and the Democratic Congressional Committee.

The 1st Congressional District is made up of 32 counties covering the entire Upper Peninsula and the northern Lower Peninsula.

The 61-year old Benishek was a surgeon at a veteran’s hospital in the western U.P. before winning election to Congress in 2010.
