Kivela And Casperson Look To Change Commercial Property Tax Rules
109th Dist. State Rep. John Kivela (D-Marquette)
Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – State Representative John Kivela and State Senator Tom Casperson announced bills this week to amend a controversial property tax law that they say has resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars by Michigan communities.
The measures address large retailers, commonly referred to as “big box stores” that appeal their property tax assessments to the Michigan Tax Tribunal regarding the “true cash value” of their properties.
Because of ambiguous legal language, the tribunal has ruled in favor of the corporations. As a

result, many local units of government have been forced to lower their assessments on “big box stores” without a fight, as they lack the necessary funds to battle major corporations in the courtroom.
Kivela and Casperson say their bills seek to adjust the way tax assessments are completed on large commercial properties.
Casperson will introduce a bill identical to Kivela’s House bill in the state Senate.
