Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Hundreds of students at Northern Michigan University have signed an online petition challenging a plan to change the slogan of the university.

A petition launched by an NMU student at change.org is asking University President David Haynes and executive staff to reconsider a possible re-branding of NMU from the long-running “Northern Naturally” slogan to “Fearless Minds”.

NMU has been in discussions of re-branding the University over the last year with corporate marketing firm Genesis, Inc. to develop a replacement for the “Northern Naturally” slogan after 20-plus years of use.

The petition against the new proposed slogan of “Fearless Minds” say it does nothing to distinguish NMU from hundreds of other universities in the country, is a “very impersonal statement, and has no ties to the culture that makes NMU so unique”.

It adds , NMU has always been proud of its connection to the wilderness of the U.P. and the close-knit Marquette community, and the slogan should reflect that.

Over 500 students have signed the petition at this time.
