Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – State evaluation of a proposal by a Canadian company to acquire 10-thousand acres of forest land in the eastern Upper Peninsula for limestone mining is moving forward.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Graymont Inc. recently held a town hall meeting in the town of Rexton, which has a population of 183.

Reports say that while people there are excited about the prospect of new jobs the company wouldn’t say how many jobs the new mine would create – but did say they would hire locally.

Others expressed concerns about the environmental impact of a mine.

It will likely take at least six months for DNR to make its final decision on the proposal.
