Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Officials of the Catholic Diocese of Marquette say that an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor against a deceased priest has been deemed credible.

In a statement released this morning, the Diocese says the recent allegation was lodged against Father Bernard Van der Schueren from Belgium.

The complaint deals with an incident involving a boy that happened during July of 1989 when Van der Schueren filled in for a diocesan priest at St. Michael Parish in Marquette.

Van der Schueren died in 2009 at the age of 86. Church officials say as soon as the allegation was received they immediately followed the Diocese’s Policy on Sexual Misconduct.

Kevin Branson, Director of Ministry Personnel, offered apologies to the individual who lodged the complaint against Van der Schueren and any others who may have been harmed by him.

Branson added if there are others who experienced sexual misconduct by a priest, church worker or volunteer who have not yet made a complaint to the diocese, he encouraged them to do so, no matter how long ago the abuse occurred.

Those who wish to bring a complaint or would like further information should contact Branson at the Marquette Diocese.
