Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Tens of thousands of Michigan residents and nonresidents are hitting the woods around the state today to enjoy deer hunting.

The firearm season runs until November 30th. The DNR is encouraging all successful hunters to get their deer “checked” at a local DNR office.

Check station hours vary, so hunters should review the list of locations, times and hours at michigan.gov/deercheck.

DNR staff will record the harvest location and date, gender and antler measurements.

Data collected at check stations helps to assess the biological health of the herd and assist with future population management recommendations.
