Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Michigan Board of Canvassers has approved a petition form for a group supporting wolf hunting in Michigan.

The petition requires the naming of game species be in the hands of the Natural Resources Commission and not in the hands of a public vote.

What’s really at issue here is the controversy over wolf hunting, which is opposed by a group of environmentalists.

There is a current wolf hunt underway to reduce the population.

The hunt is supported by many who say the wolves are coming too close to residential areas.

The petition approved on Monday is effectively in opposition to another petition drive pushed by the U.S. Humane Society, designed to specifically ban wolf hunting in Michigan.  If the petition drives are successful, both issues will battle one another on election day next year.
