Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Cliffs Natural Resources has resumed iron ore pellet production at the Empire Mine.

Pellet production had been down since early last week after a fire that damaged a limestone feeding system.

The system included equipment and conveyors that feed crushed limestone into the concentrator plant.

Company officials say due to the extent of the fire, the limestone that is added during the pellet making process is currently being transported into the Empire plant by front end loaders.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The nearby Tilden Mine and processing facilities were not affected and are currently operating as normal.
