Casperson Supports Hunting And Fishing Bill
MI Senator Tom Casperson. (R)-Escanaba.
Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – State Senator Tom Casperson says he is fully endorsing a citizen-led effort to protect the scientific management of fish and wildlife in Michigan.
The Escanaba Republican says he is putting his full support behind this effort to ensuring decisions managing fish and wildlife in Michigan are based on sound science and puts natural resources first.
In a move similar to one that recently resulted in the controversial so-called “abortion rider” insurance measure becoming a veto-proof law, the petition for the citizen-initiated law, called the Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, is being put forth by the Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management.
The petition drive must gather at least 258,000 valid signatures in 180 days to place the law before the Legislature.
Under the proposed law, the Natural Resource Commission may designate game species using sound science, and have the exclusive authority to issue fisheries orders.
Active military members could receive free hunting, fishing and trapping licenses.
And $1 million would be appropriated to prevent and eliminate aquatic invasive species.
