Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Former Michigan Lieutenant Governor Connie Binsfeld has died.

Binsfeld, who was born in Munising and was the first woman to hold leadership posts in the state House, Senate and executive branch, died yesterday at the age of 89.

Binsfeld, who lived in downstate Leelanau County’s Glen Lake, had been in hospice care.

Binsfeld, a Republican, served two terms as lieutenant governor under former Governor John Engler, from 1991 through 1998.

She declined to run again when Engler successfully sought a third term.

She also served in the state House and Senate and was well known for championing children’s issues.
