State Police Report Two Weekend Snowmobile Fatalities

Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Michigan State Police say at least two people lost their lives in snowmobile accidents accross the state over the weekend.

An Illinois man was killed in a two-snowmobile accident Sunday night in the western Upper Peninsula.

State police say 50-year old Jeffrey Vandeneykel and another Illinois man were traveling on Trail #8 in Baraga County’s Duncan Township near Kenton when a deer ran out on the trail, causing their two sleds to collide.

Vandeneykel was pronounced dead at an area hospital. The other driver is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

No name has been released and the condition of the second driver is unknown.

45-year old Robert Niester of Cheboygan was killed Saturday evening when he crashed his sled in downstate Cheboygan County’s Koehler Township near Aloha State Park.

Police did not say if alcohol was a factor in that crash.

Troopers have not released any further details as both accidents remain under investigation.
