Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Firefighters responded to a weekend house fire in Negaunee.

The fire was reported around 10:15 p.m. on Saturday at 413 New Buffalo Road.

Crews arriving on the scene found black smoke coming from windows of the two-story home.

The fire caused heavy smoke and heat damage to the interior of the home on the first and second floors.

The structure is believed to be a total loss.

Firefighters were on the scene for nearly four hours.

The home owners were inside sleeping when the fire started.

Smoke alarms alerted them to the fire and they were able to escape unharmed.

Firefighters were called back to the scene just before 6:00 a.m. yesterday due to some hot spots that flared up in the basement.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

The names of the homeowners are not being released, and the Marquette County Pigs and Heat Fire Relief Fund is helping the family with a temporary place to stay and necessities.
