DNR Reminds Anglers Of Ice Shanty Regulations
Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources.
Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The DNR reminds anglers of approaching mandatory ice shanty removal dates and, regardless of date, shanties must be removed as soon as the ice is unable to safely hold them.
On Michigan-Wisconsin boundary waters, shanties must be removed by midnight on Saturday, March 15th. For all U.P. counties, shanties must be removed by midnight on Monday, March 31st.
Following the mandatory removal dates, ice shanties may still be used but must be removed daily from the ice.
Shanty owners whose structures fall through the ice are subject to penalties of jail time or fines or both.
If a shanty is removed by a government agency, the court can require the owner to reimburse that agency for an amount of up to three times the cost of the removal.
