Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is warning area residents about a telephone scam making the rounds in Marquette County.

The calls are coming to resident’s homes on land line telephones with a 202 Washington, D.C. area code and the caller is claiming to be with the Internal Revenue Service or the U.S. Treasury Department.

The caller tells the homeowner they are delinquent with the IRS for taxes and are facing a pending lawsuit.

The caller then tells the victim to send several thousand dollars to pay the delinquent tax bill and to avoid the lawsuit.

The majority of calls have been reported in the Ishpeming area and the caller is described as a male with a distinctive accent.

The Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to never give out any personal information over the phone and simply hang up if they receive such a call.
