Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Cliffs Natural Resources has announced a deal that will extend the life of the Empire Mine.

The revised commercial agreement agreement with ArcelorMittal USA Inc. will supply iron ore pellets through the end of Jan. 2017, with an option to extend the agreement for one year.

Cliffs and ArcelorMittal USA have also extended their joint partnership for the Empire Mine.

Cliffs had announced the closure of the Empire Mine at the end of this year.

Until this new agreement was reached, the Empire did not have a customer for pellet production beyond 2014.

The partnership arrangement was also scheduled to expire automatically this December without a mutual agreement of both companies to extend.

Cliffs says this amended agreement will extend the life of the Empire into 2016.
