Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – 110th District State Representative Scott Dianda is vehemently criticizing the passage of a House bill which allows more schools to be taken over and run by for-profit charter corporations.

Dianda says he is afraid that small rural schools could disappear under the plan because nothing blocks a for-profit company coming in and merging smaller schools.

The Calumet Democrat adds that it is unclear in the legislation whether these entities will have a board that is accountable to the public or subject to the Open Meetings Act and Freedom of Information Act.

Dianda says the legislation strips away local control and it does not appear that these school officials will be accountable to parents and community members.

The bill now goes back to the Senate for concurrence.
