Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says the Soo Locks opened yesterday, signaling the start of the 2014 Great Lakes shipping season.

The locks were closed on January 15th and had critical repairs and maintenance done during the winter shutdown.

The Army Corps says crews worked through this winter’s harsh elements to put the Poe Lock back into operation on schedule.

The MacArthur Lock will continue undergoing maintenance for several weeks.

The Soo Locks and crew are now ready for service despite extremely heavy ice on the St. Marys River that has delayed the arrival of the first Cargo Vessel.
