New NMU President Fritz Erickson.

Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Officials at Northern Michigan University have selected a new president for the university.

During a special public meeting this morning on campus, the NMU Board of Trustees selected Fritz Erickson as the university’s 15th president, effective July 1st.

Erickson was one of four finalists for the position.

He is provost and vice president for academic affairs at Ferris State University in downstate Big Rapids.

Erickson previously served as dean of the College of Professional and Graduate Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, dean and professor in the College of Education and Human Development at Eastern Washington University and chair of the education department/ professor of education and psychology at Michigan Technological University.

Erickson succeeds current NMU President David Haynes, who’s two-year term runs through June 30th.

He announced in December that he will return to the NMU faculty after that date.
