Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Legislation written by Senator Tom Casperson is in a package of bills passed by the state Senate protecting gun owner privacy by making firearms records confidential.

Under the bills firearms records would not be subject to requests under the Freedom of Information Act and would be available only to law enforcement officials, under certain conditions.

Casperson says he introduced the bill as there was a real need for protection for the privacy of gun owners.

The Escanaba Republican says his measure ensures that no personal information about the gun owner can be released in Michigan.

The bills have been sent to the state House for further consideration.
