Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – 108th District State Representative Ed McBroom is sponsoring a measure that would allow Michigan voters decide regional representatives on the State Board of Education starting next year.

The bill would have board candidates nominated by party conventions and elected from single-member districts for terms beginning January 1st, 2015.

The Dickinson County Republican says right now all but one of the eight education board members come from one area of the state and that does not communicate the different challenges across Michigan.

McBroom adds the measure would bring more knowledge and understanding of the diversity of Michigan’s schools to the board.

The proposal has been assigned to the House Committee on Elections and Ethics for review.
