Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The U.S. House of Representatives has unanimously passed the Demanding Accountability for Veterans Act, authored by Congressman Dan Benishek.

The bill holds the Department of Veterans’ Affairs accountable for actions related to veterans’ care and treatment across the country.

Benishek says he is familiar with the VA’s bureaucracy after working as a surgeon at a VA hospital for 20 years and this bill makes sure the VA gives veterans the care they need and deserve.

The measure requires the VA Secretary to identify who within the VA is responsible for fixing a problem identified by the Inspector General, reduce the burden on a supervisor when it is necessary to fire a bad employee, and target bonuses of employees that fail to fix problems.

The Upper Michigan Republican says that veterans comprise nearly 15-percent of the population of the 1st Congressional District.
