Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Northern Michigan University’s new president Fritz Erickson delivered his first fall convocation address yesterday.

During the address in the auditorium of the new Jamrich Hall on campus, Erickson discussed his early impressions of the university.

He also outlined his desire to engage the full campus community in developing a useful strategic plan to address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Erickson said he wants to empower NMU employees by encouraging them to share ideas with him.

He said when he arrived on campus he was handed a complex hierarchical organizational chart with lots of boxes and lines in a giant pyramid, which he believes limit engagement and creativity in higher education.

Erickson said there are two types of plans, ones that are high-gloss, overproduced and sit on shelves collecting dust and those that truly provide a working framework.

He emphasized that the latter requires an engaged process in which the entire university community collectively identifies and embraces a set of core values.

The master planning effort will begin this fall.
