Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Marinette Marine will continue to build Littoral Combat Ships for the U.S. Navy under a funding provision in the National Defense Authorization Act.

$1.4 billion has been allocated in the act for continued construction of the vessels.

Marinette Marine, just across the Michigan border in Wisconsin, is one of two shipyards building the ships and employs several hundred Michigan residents and relies on many Michigan suppliers.

The bill authorizes funding for the Department of Defense and the national security programs of the Department of Energy.

The U.S. House is expected to take up the bill this week, with Senate consideration to follow.
