Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) –  A Marquette County fatal shooting has been ruled accidental.

State Police at the Negaunee Post say the shooting that claimed the life of 67-year-old Athena Engle of Republic Township was an accident.

Troopers responded to Engle’s residence around 4:00 p.m. Friday after a call to Central Dispatch from Engle.

She called 911 and told responders she had accidentally shot herself in the leg with a .38-caliber handgun.

Engle, who was alone at the house when the incident occurred, was taken to U.P. Health Systems-Marquette where she died on Sunday.

Authorities investigating the scene say no signs of foul play were found.
