Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A major power outage remains in the city of Escanaba this morning.

According to Escanaba Public Safety, an explosion at a city electric substation around 1:30 a.m. caused the failure of a main transformer.

No injuries were reported, but city officials say repair and restoration of electric service is requiring extensive labor.

Crews are currently working to restore power in affected areas, but other locations in the city may lose power during this process.

All residents in the city are encouraged to keep their heat at a higher level, but to conserve energy wherever possible.

City residents should expect rolling blackouts over the course of the next two days unless informed otherwise.

People affected by the outage may seek shelter at the Escanaba Civic Center, or the YMCA.

WalMart of Escanaba and Grace Church of Gladstone have also offered to be warming centers for anyone in need.
