Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – In the race for the 1st Congressional District seat being vacated by retiring Congressman Dan Benishek, former chair of the Michigan Democratic Party Lon Johnson of Kalkaska beat former Kalkaska County Sheriff Jerry Cannon in the Democratic primary.

Johnson had 31,677 votes to Cannon’s 12,539.

He will face retired Marine Lt. General Jack Bergman of Watersmeet in the November 8th General Election.

Bergman beat out State Senator Tom Casperson of Escanaba in the Republican primary by a final tally of 33,624 to 27,811.

Former State Senator Jason Allen of Traverse City finished third in the Republican primary with 25,604 votes.

The district includes all of Upper Michigan and a portion of northern Lower Michigan including Traverse City, Petoskey and Alpena.
