Garden, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Officials say the Poverty Island Wildfire is about 60-percent contained.

The fire has been burning since late June on the 200 square-acre island off of the Garden Peninsula in Lake Michigan.

The fire appears to have started from a lightning strike and has burned over 125 acres.

A successful burnout operation earlier this week on the northern part of the island reduced the vegetation on the ground and protected a historic lighthouse and two associated buildings.

Fire crews will continue to put out hot spots near the fire’s edge to keep it from growing over the next week.
