Lansing, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – An Upper Michigan lawmaker is supporting a call by Governor Rick Snyder to study benefits of better electrical connections between Michigan’s two peninsulas and Canada.

Snyder has asked the Midcontinent Independent System Operator, or MISO, to study connecting the eastern U.P. to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and also strengthening the connection between the U.P. and the northern Lower Peninsula power grid at the Straits of Mackinac.

State Senator Tom Casperson says the study is a good way to find out if Michigan ratepayers have an option to save money and improve reliability.

The Escanaba Republican says he has advocated for such a study for several years.
