WI Fatal Accident Involving U.P. Ambulance

Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Marinette County Wisconsin Sheriff’s Office has updated the investigation of yesterday’s fatal traffic accident involving an ambulance from Escanaba and a car.

The accident happened around 10:45 a.m. central time on US-41 and Access Road #3 in Peshtigo, Wisconsin.

A sedan, driven by 76-year-old Norita Gifford of Peshtigo, had pulled out onto the highway was struck broadside by the southbound ambulance, driven by 57-year-old Thomas Bell of Escanaba.

The car ended up in the northbound lanes of US-41 after impact. The ambulance crossed the median, both northbound lanes, and came to rest on nearby railroad tracks.

Gifford was pronounced dead at the scene. A dog in her car was also killed.

Bell and 27-year-old Andrew Metzler, an ambulance attendant, along with a female patient were taken to Bay Area Medical Center in Marinette for treatment.

Bell remains hospitalized in Marinette while Metzler was treated and released.

The name of the female patient is being withheld, but she has been transferred to a hospital in Green Bay.
