Blaine, MN – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The driver of an Upper Michigan fire crew truck that crashed this weekend in Minnesota, killing two fire fighters, has been arrested.

28-year-old Michael Johnson of Baraga has been charged with Criminal Vehicular Homicide for Operating a Vehicle in a Grossly Negligent Manner.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon on I-35 West at 95th Avenue in Blaine, Minnesota when the southbound Beartown Firefighting Crew truck left the roadway, struck the median cable barriers and rolled over.

25-year-old Alan Swartz and 23-year-old James Shelifoe, both of Baraga, were killed in the crash.

Seven other firefighters in the truck, including Johnson, were also injured, and according to reports, they are expected to recover.

The crew was heading to Utah to help fight the Box Canyon wildfire.
