Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Authorities in Alger County say one person died in a snowmobiling accident in Onota Township yesterday.

44-year-old Jeffrey Togstad from Weyauwega, Wisconsin was killed in the accident around 5:00 p.m. on Trail 417 just west of the Deerton Road.

He was the last person in a group of four snowmobilers who were westbound on the trail.

The other riders noticed that Togstad was no longer following and back tracked to find that he had crashed into some trees after losing control of his snowmobile.

Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful at the scene. Togstad’s snowmobile hit a depression in the snow on a bridge at the Laughing Whitefish River which sent his snowmobile airborne.

Togstad was either ejected or he jumped off of the machine and was thrown into several small trees.

Excessive speed is suspected to be a contributing factor in this accident which remains under investigation.
