Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – U.S. Congressman Dan Benishek says the Army Corps of Engineers must prioritize replacing the Soo Locks before maintenance issues interrupt commerce.

Benishek has joined a bipartisan, bicameral effort encouraging the Army Corps to publicly release new information related to the locks.

According to Benishek, the Army Corps recently completed a sensitivity analysis which would help determine the need for an eventual replacement lock at Sault Ste. Marie.

The findings, however, have not been publicly released. A letter, signed by the majority of the Michigan Congressional delegation, including both U.S. Senators urges the agency to make the analysis information available.

The findings should assist in moving the Soo Locks up on the priority funding list.

All Army Corps projects are ranked based on critical need.

Benishek says the locks are absolutely critical to jobs and industry around the country and if they were out of commission for even a day, the economic impact would be severe.
